Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.
Proverbs 3:6

The Sound of Owls

While sipping coffee early one morning, I heard them out in the pre-dawn dark--two owls calling back and forth. Owls make some of the loneliest sounds in the world. I hear the reedy shape of hollowness and longing resonating in the sounds they make, almost as if they were some sort of winged woodwind instruments. We're all searching for something, I thought, their music making me feel lonesome.

Have you ever misplaced something and looked for it "everywhere," but couldn't find it? Then, finally, there it was, in the last place you looked? Well, yes. . . How silly would we be to keep searching after we'd found it?

How silly are we, then, to ever feel lost or lonesome after we've been found by and in Christ?

Yet, unlike those lost objects we seek, even after we've been sought and found, we have seeking to do.

This is what the Lord says: "Stop at the crossroads and look around. Ask for the old, godly way, and walk in it. Travel its path, and you will find rest for your souls (Jeremiah 6:16 NLT).

Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need (Matthew 6:33).

The way I see it, every day we come to a crossroads of some sort or another at which we must decide which path to take. Will we choose the "old, godly way" that promises to bring rest for our souls, even though it might not be the easiest path to walk? Will we seek the Kingdom of God, above all else? Above all else? Above all else?

I hope my answer is always "yes," even if it sometimes makes me feel as lonely as owls sound.
