Let all that I am praise the Lord, O Lord my God, how great you are! You are robed with honor and majesty. You are dressed in a robe of light.
Pslam 104: 1-2

Hooked on Feeling?

At times, when I've needed a pair of socks, but have had to leave the light off in the dark bedroom, I've walked in, carefully feeling my way toward the wardrobe and the small basket of socks within.  I grope around for a pair until I find what feels right.  But this I've learned; in the dark, there's no telling what color they are.  The socks I pull out are as likely to be white as they are to be black. I won't know until I bring them into the light.  It seems simple enough, but I'll say it anyway, as much for myself as for anyone, light plays an important role in our ability to choose correctly.  Jesus said,

Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going.  John 12:35b

Choosing socks is a very minor decision compared with other decisions we make in life like how to spend our time, our money, our energies, and who to spend them with or on.  And, of course, these decisions have a lot larger and more lasting consequences than whether one's socks match the color of their sneakers. If we can't even be sure of choosing the right socks in the dark, what makes us think we can make the right life decisions in the dark?  In the dark, anything can "feel right".  How do we turn on the light in our decision making?  Jesus said,

I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness.  John 12:46

Believing that Jesus came as the Savior of the world is the first and most important step.  After that, if we will consciously and deliberately choose to bring every decision into the light through prayer. . . the Spirit of truth. . . dwells with you and will be in you. . .(John 14: 17) . . . the Helper, the Holy Spirit. . . will teach you all things (John 14:26).  All things?  Yes, all things!  Once we've put our faith in Christ, there's never any reason we have to grope around trying to make decisions in the dark.
